If pain occurs in the area of the temporomandibular joints and muscles, there are many different causes. Structures that can be affected include the teeth, muscles, joints and ear canals.<\/p>\n<p>When <strong>the temporomandibular joint clicks<\/strong>, there is a subluxation, i.e. a &#8220;dislocation&#8221;, of the head of the temporomandibular joint. Cracking alone does not necessarily need to be treated unless pain occurs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Parafunctions<\/strong> such as grinding and clenching often occur unconsciously during sleep. They can be detected by excessive wear of the teeth, tension in the muscles and pain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Restricted movement of the temporomandibular joint<\/strong> can be caused by an acute trauma such as a car accident or a surgical procedure.<\/p>\n<p>There is also<strong> hypermobility of the lower jaw<\/strong>. This can lead to a dislocation of the temporomandibular joint when yawning, for example.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Arthritis<\/strong> is an inflammation of the temporomandibular joint.
